Rollover is an advanced Contrology exercise that requires significant core strength, spinal mobility, and flexibility. During pregnancy, this movement may no longer feel appropriate for some individuals, while others with extensive Pilates experience and continued comfort may choose to practice a modified version. Every pregnancy is different, and your movement should always reflect what your body is communicating.
If the full exercise no longer feels supportive, you can still train many of the same movement patterns. Using a bolster, folded blanket, or towel beneath the hips creates a gentle incline that allows you to strengthen the lower abdominals while practicing controlled leg lowering within a comfortable range of motion. This modification is valuable not only during pregnancy but also for anyone building the strength and control needed for the full exercise.
For experienced practitioners who continue to feel comfortable performing Rollover during pregnancy, widening the legs can create additional space for the growing belly and reduce unnecessary pressure. Your range of motion may naturally become smaller, and that's completely acceptable. The emphasis should remain on slow, controlled movement rather than achieving the fullest expression of the exercise.
Throughout your prenatal journey, remember that there is no universal list of movements every person can or cannot do. Your previous experience, flexibility, strength, and the way your pregnancy progresses all play a role in determining what feels appropriate. Let your body guide your decisions, move with intention, and know that adapting an exercise is never a step backward. The movement may change, but the purpose stays the same.
