The Roll Up is a foundational Pilates exercise that develops core strength, spinal articulation, flexibility, and body awareness. As your pregnancy progresses, the full expression of the movement may change, but the intention remains the same. Whether you're rolling all the way up or practicing just a portion of the movement, you're still building strength with purpose.
If sitting up from the mat feels challenging, using gentle momentum can be a helpful teaching tool. Imagine holding a ball and tossing it forward as you begin to sit up. This natural motion can assist you through the most demanding part of the exercise while allowing you to maintain control throughout the movement.
Props such as a pregnancy wedge, bolster, folded blanket, or rolled towel can elevate the upper body and make the Roll Up more accessible. Another effective option is to perform the movement in reverse—begin seated, reach forward into your stretch, and slowly roll back only as far as you can maintain control. This variation continues to strengthen the abdominals while encouraging spinal mobility without requiring the full movement from the floor.
Every pregnancy is different, and every body brings a unique history of strength, flexibility, and movement experience. There is no single "correct" way to perform an exercise. The goal is not to force your body into a particular shape, but to understand the purpose behind the movement and adapt it with intention. When you allow your body to guide the process, you create a practice that is both safe and empowering. The movement may change, but the purpose stays the same.
